1st edition: ADVANCES IN SUSTAINABLE AQUACULTURE PROCEDURES

       

  The Approach:

The four-day event will facilitate discussion and exchange of information between European Research Area members, specially the ones from Overseas Regions and Overseas Countries and territories on current aquaculture issues dealing with marine spatial planning,  ecosystem interactions and aquaculture development in coastal areas.

This scientific and technical course will be organized around specific modules focusing on:

    • Aquaculture Development in Coastal Areas
    • Health and Welfare
    • Breeding and Genetics
    • Marine Spatial Planning
    • Ecosystem Interactions

 

 

 

 

 

TARGET AUDIENCE:

The course is aimed at early-stage researchers (e.g., Master and PhD students) and professionals from the aquaculture sector or environmental research institutions across the globe. More specifically the course will welcome research and professionals candidates from European Outermost Regions and Overseas Countries and Territories.

OBJECTIVES:

The training course will provide participants with an in-depth perception on the state-of-the art and future challenges facing aquaculture sustainable development in diverse marine environments. The course will offer technical material to facilitate the acquisition of essential knowledge required for the development of sustainable aquaculture under an ecosystem approach. The provision of scientific and technical skills will enable exchange of know-how and good practices between experts and participants.   

PRACTICAL INFORMATION:

Location: All Workshop’s sessions will be held at the Scientific and Technological Marine Park of the Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), Taliarte, Gran Canaria, Spain.

 

Registration: Registration will remain open until the 15th of October 2015

Registration fees: The fees include tuition, materials, coffee/tea, lunches, transfers, technical visits and a social dinner.

- Early registration (Until 30th of September): 150€

- Standard registration (From 1st of Oct to 15th of Oct): 250€

 

Scholarships: Scholarships for attendants from European ORs and OCTs are offered by the Ecoaqua ERA Chair project and will cover course fees and travel costs.

- Eligibility: To be considered for the Scholarships the applicant must:

-       Be an attendant from European Overseas Regions, countries or territories.

-       Submit a resumed CV (three page maximum) together with a letter of interest and a letter of reference and send the documents to gcourtois@fpct.ulpgc.es

 

Accommodation is available at a rate of 25€/night. Please book the required number of nights as part of the registration fees and procedures to ensure reservation.

Day 1: 26th of October

  • Ecosystem approach to aquaculture: planning and implementation
  • Introductory Lecture: Sustainable Seafood Production: A Global Issue
  • The European Marine Strategy Framework Directive
  • Marine Spatial Planning applied to Coastal Aquaculture
  • Coastal Aquaculture and Site selection related European Projects
  • Aquaculture zoning, site selection and area management

 

Day 2: 27th of October

  • Selective Breeding Programs in Aquaculture
  • Genetic tools to monitor fish behaviour and performance in aquaculture

 

Day 3: 28th of October

  • Monitoring protocols associated to coastal aquaculture production sites
  • Fish cages and associated fish communities
  • Integrated Multitrophic Aquaculture

 

Day 4: 29th of October

  • Insights on Health and Welfare issues of aquaculture species
  • Alternative ingredients in Aquafeeds
  • Additives of interest in Aquafeeds

 

Practical sessions and visits:

  • Aquaculture Fish Processing Plant
  • Marine Spatial Planning tools
  • RAS Shrimp production farm

 

General information:

 

Structure: Morning Sessions will cover thematic presentations and the Afternoon Sessions will focus on practical aspects.

This intensive post-graduate course is taught in English and has an academic value of 3 ECTS
