The IU-ECOAQUA has an international projection aimed at achieving better planning in the integrated management of the marine environment, including the sustainable development of coastal fisheries and aquaculture under an ecosystem approach.

Aquaculture is one of the food producing sectors with the greatest growth potential and as foreseen by FAO, it is the only possibility to maintain the proportion of fish in the global diet. Under this paradigm, aquaculture is revealed as a feasible possibility to increase fish supply constantly and effectively. In this sense, the IU-ECOAQUA has as its objective the conservation of marine ecosystems and the sustainable development of aquaculture to contribute to social and economic development, taking advantage of its experience in research programs, technology transfer, training of human capital, educational plans, etc.
